Resveratrol is a polyphenol compound that is extracted from red grape skins. It is thought to help control glucose metabolism, cardiovascular health, and has some anti-aging benefits. A new study looked at its effects on memory. In this study, overweight, healthy adults (over age 50) took resveratrol supplements for 26 weeks and were compared to a group taking only placebos. It was found that the group taking the supplement experienced enhanced memory retention and increased functional connectivity of the hippocampus, as compared to the placebo group. The researchers are hopeful that resveratrol proves to be of benefit to the aging brain. Rather than reaching for the wine glass, try incorporating resveratrol into your supplement regimen.
