Moisturize your Skin from the Inside Out

By Shannon Morehouse, MA, CHHC

News Flash! The most magnificent moisturizer in the world cannot combat dry skin on its own. The perfect regimen to conquering that dry skin that Old Man winter has given you involves both outer and inner treatments.

You probably already know that a high-quality moisturizer free of chemicals is a great step in hydrating your skin. Natur-Tyme has dozens of options. Also, be sure to use a humidifier in the winter months; your home’s dry heat does an ugly number on your skin!

Also keep in mind that your skin is an outer reflection of your insides. A diet that is mostly plant-based and filled to the brim with veggies, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats will certainly be an ally to your skin. In addition to a healthy diet, two great steps to smoother skin are to keep hydrated and consider a fish oil supplement.

Drink Water, Water, and more Water!

Every organ in your body is comprised of cells and cells need water to function properly. Your skin is an organ and its cells depend on water to maintain moisture, radiance, and a youthful glow.

Omega-3s and your Skin

It is very hard to obtain ample omega-3 from your diet. Fish oil is the best source of Omega-3 fats. These healthy essential fatty acids help to normalize your skin and prevent dehydration of your skin cells. They also help calm irritated skin courtesy of their anti-inflammatory properties. To help alleviate dry skin, look for a fish oil supplement that has at least 500 mg of omega-3s. In the drier, winter months, you may need to double that dose.

For the month of January, we have a cross-departmental promotion going on. Buy one of 11 MyChelle moisturizers and receive a free New Chapter Wholemega (fish oil), while supplies last.

Follow these steps and you’ll have the silky skin you long for in no time!

Five Foods That Act as Natural Sunscreen Some Content Originally

Published by Live in the Now

Featured image

Last week, we published a blog about great sunscreens that are safe and effective as well as supplements that can further help protect you from the sun from the inside and out. This week, we highlight foods that can help bolster your resistance to damaging UV-light. These foods contain antioxidants that help stabilize skin cells, preventing and repairing damage.

  1. Chocolate: Women who drank a hot cocoa high in “flavanol” antioxidants daily for three months had 25% less reddening after UV irradiation and more moist, less scaly skin than women drinking low-flavanol cocoa, says new German research. Another source of flavanol is dark chocolate.
  2. Watermelon andTomatoesGerman research also finds that lycopene (the antioxidant in watermelon and tomatoes) reduces sensitivity to sunburn. Take note that tomato sauce has more lycopene than raw tomatoes.
  3. Pomegranate: At the University of Wisconsin, antioxidant-rich pomegranate extract inhibited changes in human cells exposed to UV light.
  4. Fatty Fish: EPA, which is an omega-3 fatty acid in fish, reduced signs of UV damage in skin cells, says a recent Korean study. In a British test, taking 4,000 mg of omega-3 a day (the amount in about 12 ounces of salmon) for three months cut sunburn damage 30%. If you can not stomach fish every day, fish oil is a great option and most of the high-quality varieties carried at Natur-Tyme disguise the fish taste with flavors like lemon, orange, or strawberry.
  5. Green Tea: Several studies show drinking green tea helps prevent sunburn and pre-cancerous changes. In a small study, drinking about two cups of green tea reduced UV skin damage.

It’s Time for Fall and Winter Pampering

Capers-Alexis_AFTERBy Alexis Capers

Fall winds are in the air! I LOVE THIS TIME OF YEAR. The world smells clean and fresh. I can sense the gentle change of warm to cool and the crisp promise of sweaters and warm apple cider!

These scents are so calming and pleasant to me. I like the smell of cinnamon in my home. It brings about a feeling of holiday, of bringing the family together to celebrate! We can also use scents to remind us of other important times in our lives. Who doesn’t love the smell of a new baby?

Fall is also the time of year when I start to indulge in long soaks in a warm bath. It relaxes my muscles, restores the dryness that fall and winter can bring, and feels so pampering after a long, hard day.

My favorites include our new line from One with Nature (beautifully-crafted soaps and salts that sooth the senses and soften the skin)! Add a few drops of argan oil or almond oil to your bath and really boost the moisture. Finish with a great coconut oil blend or great body lotions from Hydrame, John Masters, or Natur-Tyme.

So pull out those candles, dust off that bath pillow, and get soaked!

Products I’m Falling for this Week:

One with Nature products come in several scents as well as fragrance-free. Pick your pleasure and enjoy! Hydrame is an amazing lotion for all skin types. It heals and protects with coconut and 10 other essential oils for maximum skin soothing. NOW Coconut Oil is perfect for those who want a simple solution to moisturizing! And MyChelle Argan Oil is an amazing product for all-over moisture from head-to-toe, even your hair!

Alexis’ Health & Beauty Journey #12: On Sharing Your Experiences

Capers-Alexis_AFTERBy Alexis Capers – Alexis Capers is our Enhanced Beauty Salon and Enhanced Beauty Area manager. Join her every other Wednesday for a blog about her journey into natural health & beauty products.

This week I was touched by a very sensitive subject. I always pride myself on being present in my friends and families lives. I feel as though I have my finger on the pulse of what is truly going on. But I found out how blind we can be to matters that others want to hide from us, and do it well.

I discovered as I went through a journey of re-learning how to go about my diet and eating habits (it’s like learning to walk again) that someone close to me is suffering from Anorexia. I was stunned, but thinking back could see how this was true. Then she shared with me that a close friend of mine confided in her that she too has the disease. It is a helpless feeling to know this about these individuals and I feel like I should have been doing something for them.

I battle with my own weight and body issues. If you are overweight and labeled obese, it is considered a disease; it is the number-two preventable killer after cigarette smoking. But we can put down a smoke. Food is necessary in life and poor eating much harder to overcome. I am fortunate that this job opportunity at Natur-Tyme came when it did. I believe in some ways, it has saved my life.

I am more conscious of my body and what I need to maintain my health now and beyond. I was not given the proper guidance when I had Gastric Bypass Surgery (Roux-en y to be exact) back in 2001. Two babies and chemotherapy later, I have fallen deep into bad eating habits and choices.

My message to you today is to not be afraid to share what you are dealing with.

Find someone you trust and let them help you help yourself. Every day is a battle to be won. Every evening is another chance to say “I failed,” but if you do slip, pick yourself back up and fight again tomorrow! We have a knowledgeable support network at our store willing to get you on track.

Take care of you. We only get one of you to go around!

Items I’m falling for this week:

Seaweed bath cellulite soap is made with caffeine so it helps reduce the appearance of cellulite! Café smoothies! They are delicious and nutritious. Almond Dream Bites Vanilla or Chocolate (why choose!). The best non-dairy ice-cream alternative I have ever tried! A hearty 15 pieces are only 230 Calories, yum! If you prefer a crunchy snack, Sage Valley White Cheddar puffs are the best! They taste wonderful and are not too bad on the calorie count either! Plus, we have a wide variety of bulk items to keep you healthy.

Healthful Summer Crafts

By Sam Derbyshire, Supplement Educator

herbsNearly 20 years ago, I found Natur-Tyme in my hunt for some obscure dried herbs. I had been learning to make my own soaps, salves, lotions, etc. and I was told about this little store that sold herbs by the ounce. I was in awe of the wall of jars that they had full of an amazing variety of herbs. As it turned out, the echinacea, ginseng, and comfrey I was looking for are rather common herbs.

Since then, I have tried recipes from many books. One of the few books I consider a ‘must have’ is Dina Falconi’s Earthly Bodies and Heavenly Hair (available at Natur-Tyme for $17.95). It has a multitude of recipes for many purposes. This book has recipes for everything from deodorant and sunscreen to sunburn care and cooling body splash. Here is the recipe for the body splash.

This is “an invigorating, cleansing and hydrating body splash for all skin types” from page 80 in the book Earthly Bodies and Heavenly Hair:

Spearmint Blend Body Splash

Combine equal parts dried spearmint leaf, dried nettle, and dried fennel seeds. Crush in a mortar and pestle (or food processor if mortar and pestle is not available). Boil 16 oz. of water and make an infusion with the crushed herbs. Steep for four hours and then strain. You can use more spearmint if you want a stronger mint smell. Pour strained infusion into a measuring cup and add an equal amount of 80 proof vodka. Stir together and pour into a container and splash as desired.

You can forgo the vodka and just use water if you wish, but it is an excellent preservative and helps it to dry quicker on your skin. If you do skip the vodka, this mixture will not keep for more then a week.

This same type of product can be made with ½ teaspoon of essential oil of Spearmint and ½ teaspoon of essential oil of fennel instead of the herbs in the above recipe. Note that the essential oils make this recipe quite potent.

Alexis’ Health & Beauty Journey #11: On Time and Going Natural

Time. If I could bottle it and sell it to people, boy would I be rich! We never seem to have enough of it, always running out of it; and in some cases wishing it would go faster! Yet the one time trap I catch myself in periodically is the “I have plenty of time to get to that later” mantra.

As life moves on, I find that saying to be sadly inaccurate. I don’t have infinite amounts of time to get my health in order. Time to spend enjoying the moments I should cherish with my children. Time to reconnect with loved ones and friends I have lost touch with, not having the “Time” to stay connected.

Our wellbeing is balanced in good nutrition, peace of mind, healthy relationships, and effective management and use of our time.

Take a look at the common things you use every day on your body. Most women put up to 515 different combinations of chemicals on their bodies daily, many that are combined to “save time” getting ready in the morning, while never really thinking of the impact on their health. Common shampoos contain an average of 15 chemical ingredients, eye shadows 26, lipsticks 33, hairsprays 11, blushes and foundations a whopping 40 combined!!!

How many of these items and more do you slather on each day? I know I wear my fair share. And we wonder why our minds are not as sharp. Where has our energy gone? Personally, I always blame it on my kids! (They always take the best of you ya know!)

Well it’s time to stop the insanity as Susan Powter used to say! Get back the vitality you once had. Be sharp again. Heck, remember where you left your car keys for a change! We can help you reduce the numbers of nasty chemicals by introducing you to safer alternatives. The beautiful part is, you don’t have to give up a whole lot to be natural!

Start today on a healthy path by taking the time to talk with us about what products you can add to your daily routine, even one at a time, to reduce your exposure to nasty ingredients. While you’re here, take the time to meet with our wellness and supplement educators on how to add one or two essentials into your daily regimen to give you more strength and clarity to live stronger and longer! Hey, did I just buy you more time???

What I’m falling for this week:

Jarrow Vitamin B12 gives me the energy I need to keep going! MegaFood supplements carry a wonderful women’s multi-vitamin to get the basics down. Griffin Daily or Restorative Shampoo and Conditioners are both very “clean” products and they are all on sale for August! Dead Sea Warehouse bath salts (also on sale) have the right amount of minerals in them to get your body balanced and your skin feeling wonderful! I could go on and on…

Alexis’ Health & Beauty Journey #10: Uplifting Those Around You

No matter how strong we think we are…no matter how much we try to hold it together…no matter how much we sometimes “want it to be about me,” we must crouch down and prepare to lift up those around us.

I heard a phrase this week: “People don’t leave jobs, they leave people (managers).” Very interesting, I thought, as I digested the words. What type of manager am I? Do I look out for the common good while helping our business to grow? I can say without a doubt a resounding “YES!”

Being at Natur-Tyme for what will now be my fifth month, I am still a bit of a babe in the woods. I can certainly say that the people here have opened up the best in me, helped me face the worst in me, and have formed bonds that will undoubtedly last a lifetime (God willing)!

So my message this week is short but sweet…Love those around you with an open heart.

Feed those around you with the milk of human kindness. Walk a mile in their shoes. Live life to the fullest! Buy into all those goofy sayings. You may not be the center of it all right now, but you are right where you need to be for someone else!

What I’m falling for this week:  Acorn Design Greeting Cards and Stationary…nothing tells a person you care more that the written word. No text, email, snap chat, or tweet can replace the effect of words poured out in ink on paper!GiftIdeasBlast_AcornDesign

And when all else fails, your favorite libation in a beautiful recycled Bambeco glass will also do!

Alexis’ Health & Beauty Journey #9: MyChelle Facials

Capers-Alexis_AFTERBy Alexis Capers – Alexis Capers is our Enhanced Beauty Salon and Enhanced Beauty Area manager. Join her every other Wednesday for a blog about her journey into natural health & beauty products.

Now that summer is here, my skin is going through its attitude changes! I find that breakouts are more likely (un-fair, I thought I left those behind as a teenager!). But the fact is adult acne is more common than adolescent acne. Especially in women!  Oddly, we are fighting aging, sun exposure, and zits?!?  Well the solution is clearer than your best skin…a MyChelle facial!

I have been using the MyChelle skin care line for some time now. You may even remember me sharing some picks I have fallen for in blogs past. The line is extremely effective for such natural ingredients. You can find a product for any skin type and concern. From the most sensitive and reactive skin to those who want to age gracefully, MyChelle has you covered.

Because I believe so much in this line, I wanted to create a way for you as a consumer to fully enjoy its benefits.

Thus, the MySpa program was born!  When you make a MyChelle retail purchase of $50 or more, you receive a FREE 30 minute facial!  When you purchase $75 or more, you get a FREE 60 minute facial!  If you have never had a service like this before, there is no better time. By investing in the products you already use, need, and love, you get a boost with the professional service that preps the skin for all those great MyChelle benefits!

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to sell you skin care. I am, however, trying to sell the idea that taking care of your skin is not a treat, but a necessity. So often we look at spa services as “pampering” or “extras.” What these small snippets of time do for your physical being can greatly benefit your well being. There’s never a better time to start addressing your skin and the environmental exposures we face than with our MySpa program. The MySpa program runs through August 31st. We have four unique facials to choose from designed with you in mind.

So come to Natur-Tyme today and talk with our knowledgeable staff about the wonders of MyChelle, and take time to take care of the person who takes care of the ones you love!

Products I’m falling for this week:

Creamy Pumpkin Cleanser, I’m not a huge fan of creamy cleansers but this product has changed my mind!  Gentle yet effective, it is perfect for my skin!  Fruit Enzyme Mist: perfect for feeling refreshed, keep it in the fridge for a cool feeling on a hot summer day!  Fabulous Eye Cream:  Look out lines and wrinkles!  Argan Oil:  Great for everything, this lightweight oil will improve your skin, hair, and nails! Serums! (Too many to list!). Supreme Polypeptide Cream:  Ideal moisturizer and foundation for applying your favorite Jane Iredale BB cream!

Alexis’ Health & Beauty Journey #8: On Ideology and My New Mission

Capers-Alexis_AFTERBy Alexis Capers – Alexis Capers is our Enhanced Beauty Salon and Enhanced Beauty Area manager. Join her every other Wednesday for a blog about her journey into natural health & beauty products.

My oldest son wrote his final English paper before high school graduation on ideology. He asked me to proofread it for him. I found this to be my motherly duty so I obliged. What I found out was, not only is my son a fantastic writer, but also, it got me thinking. In my journey through life as an adult, one thing I have struggled with internally is self-confidence. No matter how much praise I received, my personal doubt cloud would pop up and cast a shadow on that praise. I have grown to be a much better force in fostering my personal confidence (sometimes a good girdle helps!), but it extends beyond what we build for ourselves.

With ideology, we all have a personal “idea” of how we and others should behave, appear and respond to one another throughout life. If we look at leaders of our past, we can learn from their methods of ideology, good or bad. I have taken this view to create a mission for myself. I may not be a public figure like the late Dr. Maya Angelou, however I too can make a difference (even small) that will carry on long after I depart this earth.

My new mission has been to take that positive energy I continue to feed and grow inside me, and share shoots of it with those around me.

Like that great hanging plant blooming in your home, a small sprig of fellowship will root itself in those around you. When you give another the gift of vision to see the greatness in them, you too will grow!

I have found this to be true not only in my role as a manager, but also to those I encounter on a day-to-day basis who share the burden of cancer treatment, motherhood, rough childhoods, abuse, failed marriages, the list goes on and on. These “clouds” tend to linger and don’t want to clear away. We have to inhale a large breath and blow with all our might! The energy dispelled is greater some times than others, but the clouds will part.

My biggest saying is, “have faith that if you put your foot out to take a step, the ground will come up to meet you”, meaning, even if you don’t see how you can make that first step, don’t let the fear of falling stop you from moving. The ground WILL be there. And if for some reason you falter, know that there are those around you who will help pick you up and brush you off. Find the “life horticulturists” in your circle and give them your time. Let go of the emotional vampires. They will only suck the life from you!

I feel we would have a much better world if our ideology was less judgmental and biased. Plants provide oxygen to keep our air healthy. Grow the seeds of confidence and you will have plenty of oxygen to gather all the breath you need!

What I’m falling for this week:

Closets for Charity:  This wonderful program started by our own Wendy Meyerson has provided beautiful outfits at great prices for those seeking to enhance their style quotient. The proceeds go to amazing local charities so it is a win/win for all! Sow the seeds of human kindness and watch it grow. Learn to live, love, and let it go!

Until next time my beauties…

Alexis’ Health & Beauty Journey #7: Smooth and Effortless

Capers-Alexis_AFTERBy Alexis Capers – Alexis Capers is our Enhanced Beauty Salon and Enhanced Beauty Area manager. Join her every other Wednesday for a blog about her journey into natural health & beauty products.

I think we take for granted sometimes the simple things in life. I spoke last time about finding peace and enjoying moments. As I was reflecting the other day, I realized that my transition into natural products versus everyday consumer goods has been so smooth and effortless. I am amazed at how many things I have actually converted to. Not only for myself, but my spouse, my children, extended family, and friends!  Some may think I’m loony. It’s ok with me. I know I’m directing them toward a healthier way of life.

My mother-in-law broke it down for me on her last visit.

She told me I never looked better since I started using natural products!

My hair, my skin, and my energy!  Now that’s saying something!  So I encourage you all to try, even a little, to make the effort to transition to a kinder, more natural product. If I, the Glam Diva Extraordinaire can do it, you can too!

Start with simple things like Griffin or Aubrey shampoos and conditioners. They smell great, work great, and give you better results over time than standard salon products. They are reasonably priced too!  You will feel the difference and once you fall in love, you can add styling products to the natural mix.

Next, step into some amazing skin care!  Right now, we are offering the best deal in the industry! When you purchase the MyChelle products you need every day to take care of your skin, we are rewarding you with a free facial!  That’s right, I said FREE. When you invest $50 in your skin products, you get a FREE 30-minute facial. Invest over $75 in MyChelle products and get a full-hour facial, also FREE!  This is an unbeatable way to jumpstart the use of natural skin care products to effectively target any concerns you have and get your skin on the right path. We have a full line of science-meets-nature products customized to any skin type, with facials to match. No guesswork needed. Perfect for summer too!

So come fall in love with yourself all over again like I have, naturally!

Products to help you fall in love this week…Griffin Remedy Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner for color-treated hair (my personal pick!) and Aubrey Rosa-Mosqueta Shampoo and Conditioner, a color-safe formula to bring all hair types back to life!

Next, take a simple approach to skincare with a few MyChelle basics.

CLEANSE- Honeydew Cleanser is gentle but effective. For more exfoliation, try Fruit Enzyme Cleanser.

FRESHEN- with the Fruit Enzyme mist. The 2.1 oz size is perfect to take with you and refresh all day!

BOOST- Apply a serum of choice, my faves are Ultra Hyaluronic Hydrating Serum for day, Vitamin A Serum for night.

MOISTURIZE- start with Fabulous Eye Cream and NEW Advanced Argan Oil plus Supreme Polypeptide Cream (all three at a fantastic low price all summer long!).   PROTECT- your efforts!  Daily Defense Cream will deliver the perfect moisture and SPF for each day.

Couple these steps with the free facial and enjoy the skin your in!
