Omega-3s: Building Blocks of the Brain

Omega-3 fatty acids are important nutrients throughout life, from the time a mother is pregnant with her child, through the full scope of adulthood. Adequate omega-3 intake can have a significant impact on mental well-being in children, adolescents, athletes, and the elderly.* While omega-3s are best known for their cardiovascular benefits, research is now exploring the benefits of omega-3s for brain health. Understood as building blocks of the brain, omega-3s consumed in sufficient amounts can have profound health effects, including benefits for brain development, cognition, resilience, and overall health.*

Dr. Michael Lewis, founder of the Brain Health Education and Research Institute (BHERI), is a pioneer in the field of essential fatty acids and brain health, and will be a keynote speaker at Natur-Tyme’s 15th Annual Health Fair. Dr. Lewis’s work has been featured on CNN’s Sanjay Gupta, MD Show, and is frequently heard on radio. He will share real-life experiences of how omega-3s can help support the structure and function of the brain, including the amazing story of Bobby Ghassemi, who was left comatose after a 2010 car crash, and whose family worked diligently with Dr. Lewis to support his recovery.*

Co Enzyme Q-10: Who Should Take it and Why

By Carol Blair, BS, DiHom
507094075 (1)It seems that some people are unfamiliar with CoEnzyme Q-10 (aka CoQ-10), so let’s talk a little about this important nutrient cofactor.

CoQ -10 is naturally produced by the body and is used by the mitochondria of every cell for energy production especially for the heart where it helps supply uninterrupted energy and increases the heart’s ability to contract. High amounts of CoQ-10 are also found in the kidneys, liver, and pancreas.

A six-year longitudinal study at the University of Texas found that individuals with congestive heart failure who were given CoQ-10 had a 75% survival rate compared to only 25% in the placebo group.

Cancer patients do better on CoQ-10 as well because it helps oxygenate the cells. Studies show improved survival rates, better energy, and less damage to the DNA when undergoing chemo.

Our potential to make CoQ-10 decreases with age. Additionally, statin drugs interfere with your body’s ability to make it; therefore, I recommend anyone taking a statin drug and most of us over the age of 55 to consider taking at least 100 mg per day.

Dairy Products Tainted with rBGH

By: Carol B. Blair, BS, CNC, DiHom
Wellness Educatorcarol

Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) is injected into cows to increase milk production. It is a synthetic version of a natural hormone produced in a cow’s pituitary gland. This artificial version was developed by Monsanto from genetically-modified E. coli bacteria.

This hormone has been banned in 30 countries including Canada, Europe, Israel, Australia, Argentina, and New Zealand because it is considered unsafe. In fact, as far back as 1999, the UN Safety Agency unanimously ruled NOT to endorse its safety which has resulted in a ban on US milk internationally.

Studies have linked it to higher risks for cancer including prostate, breast, and colorectal cancer in humans. However, in the United States, where many believe our nation’s health is less important than profits, it remains on the market.

Cows also suffer with increased mastitis, arthritis, and other health issues.

To avoid this risky hormone, look for organic milk and dairy products including whey protein or at the very least look for the words “No rBGH.”

This is Your Brain on Fish

factoids-banner_fish

Hundreds of studies have found that Omega-3 fish oil is excellent for brain health. A recent study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine found that regular fish consumption actually creates more voluminous brains (more gray matter), protecting individuals from Alzheimer’s disease. The subjects who consumed fish just once a week had hippocampuses that were 14% larger than those who did not consume fish once a week. If you dislike fish, consider an Omega-3 fish oil supplement, to help prevent cognitive decline.

Zinc: The Latest Vitamin Superstar

factoids-banner_zinc

Modern scientific studies have supported the use of zinc for boosting immune function, reducing infections, decreasing the occurrence of diarrhea, and removing toxic metals from the body. A research review published by Indian researchers earlier this year identified eight more reasons we may want to consider taking zinc: it acts like an antidepressant; it might help regulate blood pressure; it might help prevent zinc deficiency common in those with liver diseases; zinc supplementation during pregnancy may help prevent maternal morbidity and prolonged gestation; it may help prevent several risks associated with diabetes such as coronary artery disease and hypertension; it helps balance the endocrine system in geriatric patients; it may help with wound healing; lastly, it may shorten the duration of severe pneumonia.

Remember Better with Resveratrol

factoids-banner_reversatrol

Resveratrol is a polyphenol compound that is extracted from red grape skins. It is thought to help control glucose metabolism, cardiovascular health, and has some anti-aging benefits. A new study looked at its effects on memory. In this study, overweight, healthy adults (over age 50) took resveratrol supplements for 26 weeks and were compared to a group taking only placebos. It was found that the group taking the supplement experienced enhanced memory retention and increased functional connectivity of the hippocampus, as compared to the placebo group. The researchers are hopeful that resveratrol proves to be of benefit to the aging brain. Rather than reaching for the wine glass, try incorporating resveratrol into your supplement regimen.

Yet Another Amazing Benefit of Vitamin D

factoids-banner-sunshineMost of us, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, are deficient in vitamin D. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration has recently increased the recommended daily allowance from 400 IU to 800+ IU. Research has shown that vitamin D is beneficial for immune health, brain health, and more. And now a study by Italian researchers has found that vitamin D may benefit heart health. This small study looked at a group of heart failure patients, averaging 74 years old, with low vitamin D levels. Half the group took 4,000 IU vitamin D daily for 25 weeks, and the other half took a placebo. The vitamin D group experienced an improvement in ejection fraction rate (how well blood is being pumped out of the heart) by over 20%, but the placebo group worsened. The vitamin D group also lowered their systolic blood pressure.

Move Over Melatonin…Hello Tart Cherries!

factoids-banner_cherries

Melatonin works for many people who suffer from insomnia. If you have tried this and other sleep formulas, consider trying tart cherries or tart cherry juice. Researchers from Louisiana State University found that giving insomniacs tart cherry juice daily for two weeks increased sleep time by almost an hour and a half every night!

Zap that Migraine with…Ginger?

factoids-banner_gingerWe all have read about the use of ginger to alleviate nausea and an upset stomach. A recent research study has discovered that ginger may help treat migraines as well. One hundred subjects who suffered from a history of migraines were divided into two groups. One group took a common migraine prescription drug, sumatriptan(50 mg), and the other group took ginger capsules (250 mg). The participants recorded how they felt when the migraine occurred and rated the pain at multiple time lapses after taking their assigned treatment. Favorable relief was achieved in 70% of the sumatriptan-treated individuals and in 64% of the ginger-treated individuals within two hours after taking their respective treatments. If you suffer from migraines, perhaps you should give ginger a shot!

Saw Palmetto for Prostate Health

By Laurel Sterling, MA, RD155472626

Saw Palmetto is an herb typically associated with alleviating issues associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is widely used in many formulas for prostate health along with a variety of other compounds such as: stinging nettle, lycopene, green tea, selenium, zinc, vitamin D3, phytosterols, and pumpkin seed oil.

BPH is a nonmalignant enlargement of the prostate. The enlargement of the prostate leads to a narrowing of the urethra. Common signs and symptoms of BPH include: decreased force and stream of flow, dribbling after urination, increased frequency of urination, increased nighttime urination (nocturia), and occasionally painful urination (dysuria).

How do they believe that saw palmetto works? It is believed that the liposterolic (fat-soluble) extract of saw palmetto berries induces inhibition of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) binding to prostate cellular receptors, inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase, and interference with prostate estrogen receptors. Most experts believe DHT to be a major factor in the cause of less-than-optimal prostate health and prostate enlargement. Testosterone is metabolized in your body to DHT, and the enzyme that is responsible for converting testosterone to DHT is called 5-alpha-reductase (Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci.May 2012).

Many clinical studies over the years (30-90 days in length) have demonstrated a significant difference in urine flow, volume voided, dysuria, nocturia, etc. after taking saw palmetto. They have also seen that roughly 90% of men that have mild-moderate BPH feel some improvement in only four to six weeks! More recent clinical studies have observed saw palmetto’s use from six to around twelve months. In a relatively recent study, researchers compared saw palmetto 320 mg/day (Permixon) to the drug Proscar at 5mg/day. There were similar decreases in many of the symptoms of BPH, but saw palmetto did not have the side effect of erectile dysfunction that the drug did. Another similar study using saw palmetto and nettle root (Prostagutt forte) and the drug Proscar came up with similar findings.

There are no known interactions with this herb, but note that most of the clinical trials excluded men taking diuretics, alpha blockers, and anticoagulants. Possible side effects are mild gastrointestinal disturbances. NOTE: Because saw palmetto is used for mild to moderate BPH stages I and II, it is contraindicated with advanced BPH. BPH should be diagnosed by a certified healthcare practitioner or physician.

Recommended use is to take 320 mg of saw palmetto berry extract (standardized to 85%-95% fatty acids and sterols), all at once or in two divided doses with meals. Use at least six months to determine its effectiveness.
