Moisturize your Skin from the Inside Out

By Shannon Morehouse, MA, CHHC

News Flash! The most magnificent moisturizer in the world cannot combat dry skin on its own. The perfect regimen to conquering that dry skin that Old Man winter has given you involves both outer and inner treatments.

You probably already know that a high-quality moisturizer free of chemicals is a great step in hydrating your skin. Natur-Tyme has dozens of options. Also, be sure to use a humidifier in the winter months; your home’s dry heat does an ugly number on your skin!

Also keep in mind that your skin is an outer reflection of your insides. A diet that is mostly plant-based and filled to the brim with veggies, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats will certainly be an ally to your skin. In addition to a healthy diet, two great steps to smoother skin are to keep hydrated and consider a fish oil supplement.

Drink Water, Water, and more Water!

Every organ in your body is comprised of cells and cells need water to function properly. Your skin is an organ and its cells depend on water to maintain moisture, radiance, and a youthful glow.

Omega-3s and your Skin

It is very hard to obtain ample omega-3 from your diet. Fish oil is the best source of Omega-3 fats. These healthy essential fatty acids help to normalize your skin and prevent dehydration of your skin cells. They also help calm irritated skin courtesy of their anti-inflammatory properties. To help alleviate dry skin, look for a fish oil supplement that has at least 500 mg of omega-3s. In the drier, winter months, you may need to double that dose.

For the month of January, we have a cross-departmental promotion going on. Buy one of 11 MyChelle moisturizers and receive a free New Chapter Wholemega (fish oil), while supplies last.

Follow these steps and you’ll have the silky skin you long for in no time!

Protect your Skin from the Sun- Inside and Out

What’s in your sunscreen? Is it loaded with chemicals you can’t pronounce? And what are the effects of those chemicals? We know we need to protect our skin from UV rays, but it’s still important to be thoughtful about what we use to protect it. That’s why Natur-Tyme offers all-natural sunscreen lotions. Badger brand sunscreen uses zinc oxide for UV protection, in a base of organic sunflower oil, organic beeswax, vitamin E, and organic sea buckthorn. It’s water resistant, unscented, and 100% organic. Aubrey offers a “kids” (of course, adults can use it too!)  sunscreen spray. The spray option is a conconvenient way to apply sunscreen without the mess. The base is made of natural ingredients such as coconut oil, aloe extract, shea butter, and rosemary extract. Time to ditch those chemical-laden sunscreens and switch to a safe and natural solution.

There is a lot we can do to protect our skin from the inside as well. Antioxidants can help protect skin cells from damage and they can slow the time it takes for skin to redden from UV exposure. One study showed that sufficient doses of beta-carotene and vitamin E together increased the time it took for skin to redden. Lutein and lycopene are also carotenoids that show promise in slowing the rate of sunburn. Another study showed that high-dose vitamin C and vitamin E regularly reduces the risk of sunburn by 34% as compared to those taking Placebo.

If you have questions about which sunscreens or supplements are best for you, feel free to stop by and speak with one of our Licensed Estheticians or supplement educators at Natur-Tyme.
