Five Foods That Act as Natural Sunscreen Some Content Originally

Last week, we published a blog about great sunscreens that are safe and effective as well as supplements that can further help protect you from the sun from the inside and out. This week, we highlight foods that can help bolster your resistance to damaging UV-light. These foods contain antioxidants that help stabilize skin cells, preventing and repairing damage.

  1. Chocolate: Women who drank a hot cocoa high in “flavanol” antioxidants daily for three months had 25% less reddening after UV irradiation and more moist, less scaly skin than women drinking low-flavanol cocoa, says new German research. Another source of flavanol is dark chocolate.
  2. Watermelon andTomatoesGerman research also finds that lycopene (the antioxidant in watermelon and tomatoes) reduces sensitivity to sunburn. Take note that tomato sauce has more lycopene than raw tomatoes.
  3. Pomegranate: At the University of Wisconsin, antioxidant-rich pomegranate extract inhibited changes in human cells exposed to UV light.
  4. Fatty Fish: EPA, which is an omega-3 fatty acid in fish, reduced signs of UV damage in skin cells, says a recent Korean study. In a British test, taking 4,000 mg of omega-3 a day (the amount in about 12 ounces of salmon) for three months cut sunburn damage 30%. If you can not stomach fish every day, fish oil is a great option and most of the high-quality varieties carried at Natur-Tyme disguise the fish taste with flavors like lemon, orange, or strawberry.
  5. Green Tea: Several studies show drinking green tea helps prevent sunburn and pre-cancerous changes. In a small study, drinking about two cups of green tea reduced UV skin damage.

Healthful Summer Crafts

herbsNearly 20 years ago, I found Natur-Tyme in my hunt for some obscure dried herbs. I had been learning to make my own soaps, salves, lotions, etc. and I was told about this little store that sold herbs by the ounce. I was in awe of the wall of jars that they had full of an amazing variety of herbs. As it turned out, the echinacea, ginseng, and comfrey I was looking for are rather common herbs.

Since then, I have tried recipes from many books. One of the few books I consider a ‘must have’ is Dina Falconi’s Earthly Bodies and Heavenly Hair (available at Natur-Tyme for $17.95). It has a multitude of recipes for many purposes. This book has recipes for everything from deodorant and sunscreen to sunburn care and cooling body splash. Here is the recipe for the body splash.

This is “an invigorating, cleansing and hydrating body splash for all skin types” from page 80 in the book Earthly Bodies and Heavenly Hair:

Spearmint Blend Body Splash

Combine equal parts dried spearmint leaf, dried nettle, and dried fennel seeds. Crush in a mortar and pestle (or food processor if mortar and pestle is not available). Boil 16 oz. of water and make an infusion with the crushed herbs. Steep for four hours and then strain. You can use more spearmint if you want a stronger mint smell. Pour strained infusion into a measuring cup and add an equal amount of 80 proof vodka. Stir together and pour into a container and splash as desired.

You can forgo the vodka and just use water if you wish, but it is an excellent preservative and helps it to dry quicker on your skin. If you do skip the vodka, this mixture will not keep for more then a week.

This same type of product can be made with ½ teaspoon of essential oil of Spearmint and ½ teaspoon of essential oil of fennel instead of the herbs in the above recipe. Note that the essential oils make this recipe quite potent.

I say fluff because I always live to enjoy the day as much as possible. So if it’s a cloudy day (which it often can be in Syracuse), it’s really fluffy! But weather aside, I am excited to share my days and journey with you, flashbacks and hot flashes included! So join me in my path to a new beginning of wellness, work, and wonderment!

I am three weeks in my new position at Natur-Tyme and loving it! For many years, I traveled for a manufacturer doing education and sales. While I loved my job, it took me away from my family (3-year old, 10-year old, and 17-year old) so it was a balancing act to say the least! In July of 2012, I was diagnosed with stage-2A breast cancer.

My perspective on life, family, and work all changed. I realized my worth and the quality-of-life I was providing myself fell short due to taking care of others first—typical career mom.

So I changed gears, left my full time job, and on a leap of faith went back to school to pursue a career in Esthetics. Now while I love to perform services and make people look and feel better, I really love managing a team. As luck would have it (or maybe Karma?), I was approached on my graduation day by our placement teacher with this question “How do you feel about natural products?” Interesting question, I thought. How do I feel about them? I have learned now through my cancer journey how important it is to watch what I put in my body. But what about the things I put on my body? Now I will be the first to admit, I’m a product junkie! So this concept is new to me. However, I have an open mind and a thirst for knowledge, so I decided to dive in! Spring into Luminous Skin!

Old-man winter is hopefully behind us here in Central NY. Soon, the grass will be greener; the birds will sing; and it’s time to show off that springtime glow in your skin again.

Throughout the winter, our skin undergoes a myriad of changes. Due to barometric pressure repeatedly expanding and contracting the skin and cold air sapping the skin of vital water moisture, our skin can become dry and tight and even flaky. Even for the oiliest of skin, loss of water in the skin (transepidermal water loss) can wreak havoc on skin.

A professional facial service is a good jumpstart to healthy skin this time of year, as we transition from winter to spring. A professional consultation from an experienced esthetician can help you pinpoint key areas that may have been disrupted with the changing weather. Under bright light and 15x magnification, the estheticians at Natur-tyme’s Enhanced Beauty Salon can see further than the naked eye: dryness, extensive sun damage, broken capillaries, and so on. These types of issues can be treated in the facial room with key products.

Three great products to treat dry, dehydrated skin are:

  • Rosehip seed oil—This oil gradually releases nutrients and moisture into the skin and quickly repairs dry, damaged skin.
  • Hyaluronic acid—This acid can hold up to 10,000 times its weight in water. Thus, plumping the skin from inside out will help prevent TEWL (trans-epidermal water loss.)
  • Cream-based facial washes—Look for a wash containing a rich cream base of pumpkin, cucumber, or chamomile. Also check for included ingredients that soothe and heal like allantoun (from comfrey root–a natural healing plant), violet extract, or licorice root. Move cleanser around with fingers, washcloth, or facial brush. Remember light exfoliation is the key to removing dead skin cells to reveal new and radiant skin.

Winter Skin Tips Continued

In our last blog entry, Gretchen introduced tips to help keep your skin healthy through the winter. Here are some additional tips to regain that moisture-rich, pre-winter, beautiful skin you miss!

1.) Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! Both face and body can benefit from good exfoliation on a regular basis. Seek out a fine granule scrub, like one containing jojoba beads. Avoid apricot PHs or walnut shells. We want to buff off the dead skin cells, not scratch or stress the skin. You can make your own body exfoliant by mixing equal parts almond oil and turbinado sugar. Just be sure to clean your tub soon after, you don’t want to slip the next time you get in.

2.) Add a hydrating serum to your facial skincare routine. Seek out one containing Hyaluronic Acid which can hold 10,000 times its weight in water, thereby trapping water moisture in the skin.

3.) You want to hydrate as soon as you step out of the shower, and be sure to pat dry, don’t rub. Moisturizing while still damp gives the moisturizer vehicle ability, simply meaning, it can be carried into the skin on water molecules being pulled in while the skin contracts as it dries.

4.) Lastly, don’t forget about the hands, lips, and feet. Lips need to stay hydrated during the winter. It’s so easy to continuously lick our lips to hydrate them, but we’re actually doing more harm. Seek out a lip balm with shea or clove to stimulate blood flow under the lip, retaining moisture. Hands show hydration the worst during cold months and just gloves and dry air can lead to splitting & cracking. Keep a spare pair of gloves handy so you aren’t in wet gloves for too long and always remember to hydrate with a thick hand cream before putting gloves on. We can’t forget about out feet; sure, they’re stowed away in winter boots, but hot and cold temperatures swings can have our tootsies all stressed out. Exfoliate in the shower with a pumice stone and deeply moisturize afterwards. For a deep penetration of moisture, apply a thick layer of moisturizer before bedtime, slip on some cozy socks, and then slide under the covers.

Guide to Glowing Facial Skin this Winter

When I think of winter; hot cocoa, snow, and dry skin come to mind. We all know our skin changes in colder weather, but knowing how to treat it can be a bit challenging. Here are a few things to consider:

1.)Tap into a pro’s knowledge. For example, an esthetician or dermatologist can analyze your skin type and help you best address your concerns and the best skincare regimen for you.

Keep in mind that the most expensive skincare products do not mean that they are the “best;” there are plenty of well-priced, less-expensive products that work just as well. It is the ingredients that are important as well as how well your skin responds to the product.

2.) Change up your moisturizer and use it more often. The moisturizer you use during the spring and summer may not be as effective in the cooler months. One way to differentiate is look for night creams. They use an oil base instead of a water base. The oil will create a protective barrier on the skin and will help to retain moisture better.

3.) We all know how important it is to drink water year-round to stay hydrated, but don’t forget to use your humidifier to help externally. Between our homes and cars, heating systems can leave us feeling parched.

4.) Don’t forgo your sunscreen! Even in the winter months, our exposure is still significant. Be sure to use a broad-spectrum on your face and hands if needed, giving it 30 minutes to soak in before heading out and reapply as needed.


Silver for Your Skin

You may have used colloidal silver internally as a supplement for great immune health, but did you know that you can use it on your skin as well?

Colloidal silver soap is an awesome way to cleanse your skin. Colloidal silver has antibacterial properties to help alleviate unpleasant skin conditions, including acne breakouts (with regular use). Colloidal Silver Soap by Heritage is a great way to cleanse your skin. It is great for sensitive or irritated skin. Most skin problems are initiated by fungus and this soap is the best defense in the shower. With regular use, it will help maintain the proper moisture balance. Also, if your scalp is itchy and flaking, you can use this as a shampoo to help heal your scalp. Other ingredients this soap contains are olive, coconut, and palm oil, which provide a great deal of moisture. It also includes rosemary, which will leave you feeling refreshed.

After cleansing, follow with a great moisturizer that has silver. HydraMe is by far one of my favorite body lotions. The ingredients include grapeseed oil, rosehip-seed oil (rich in vitamin C), and coconut oil (an antiviral, antifungal, and a great moisturizer). Sunburn Much?

If you answered yes, sea buckthorn should be your right-hand man this summer. Sea buckthorn has natural occurring omega 3,6, and 7 (palmitoleic acid), vitamin E, and vitamin K. All these are important for skin recovery. The omegas will help with the inflammation and redness. Vitamin E, as most people know, is extremely soothing, like aloe vera. The Vitamin K will help prevent “sun spot” damage to the skin! You can find this in a body wash, facial wash, body lotion, facial lotion, bath bars, and my favorite… body oil! Weleda Sea Buckthorn Body Oil is AWESOME for after the beach and the light citrus scent is so refreshing!
